On February 12, 2026, at the UN World Food Programme (WFP) office in Mozambique, a symbolic ceremony was held to deliver humanitarian aid to Mozambique as part of the implementation of the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's "Grain from Ukraine" initiative, funded by the Italian government.

The event was attended by the Italian Ambassador to the Republic of Mozambique, Gabriele Phillip Annis, National Dicertor - WFP Representative in Mozambique, Claire Conan, the Director of the Planning and Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique, Laura Guambe, the Ukrainian Ambassador to the Republic of Mozambique, Rostyslav Tronenko, officials from the Italian and Ukrainian embassies, WFP representatives, and journalists from the Mozambican media.

In her speech, the WFP Representative in Mozambique highlighted that the “Grain from Ukraine” initiative is an example of solidarity between peoples and a commitment to global food security, strengthening the bonds of friendship between Italy, Ukraine, and Mozambique.

The Italian Ambassador emphasized that, as a consequence of Russia's war against Ukraine, approximately 70 million people worldwide have suffered from the worsening food situation; the war in Russia has considerably impacted exports of agricultural products from Ukraine (one of the world's leading producers of wheat and vegetable oil), worsening the situation with the supply of basic food in many vulnerable countries, including Mozambique.

The Ukrainian Ambassador stressed that, thanks to the initiative of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, “Grain from Ukraine,” 320,000 tons of agricultural products have already been sent to 18 countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, helping 20 million people. The Ambassador also highlighted that, during the period of 2024-2025, Ukraine, together with the WFP and with the financial support of donor countries such as Italy, supplied Mozambique with food worth more than US$16.5 million, including maize, peas, and vegetable oil. He assured of Ukraine’s readiness to assist Mozambique in addressing food security issues, not only through the supply of products but also through the transfer of technologies, equipment, and digital solutions for this purpose.
