On 28 January 2026, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) office in Mozambique hosted a ceremony to symbolically hand over food aid funded by Portugal as part of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Grain from Ukraine initiative.

The event, attended by representatives of the Portuguese and Ukrainian governments, the WFP, the diplomatic corps and the media, was an example of international solidarity in response to humanitarian challenges.

The important role of Ukraine as a reliable food supplier and the contribution of the Grain from Ukraine initiative to supporting the most vulnerable populations in Mozambique were highlighted.

Despite the ongoing war, Ukraine remains an active and responsible participant in global efforts to ensure food security.

The Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Mozambique, Rostyslav TRONENKO, underlined: "Despite the ongoing armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, we remain a reliable supplier of food.  Despite the mining of approximately 174,000 square kilometres of Ukraine’s most fertile agricultural land, and despite constant Russian attacks on ports, agricultural and energy infrastructure, Ukraine continues to guarantee food supply to many countries in the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

Mozambique is an important example of how this solidarity works in practice. During the period of 2024–2025, Ukraine, with WFP and thanks to the financial support of donor countries, delivered more than 9,076 metric tonnes of food to Mozambique, including maize, yellow split peas, vegetable oil. Portugal is one of the most active donors to this initiative in Mozambique. Thus Portugal’s financial support allowed to provide food assistance to more than 600,000 people.

These figures represent protected lives, supported communities and renewed hope. Access to food is a basic human right, and global food security must remain beyond military action, political pressure or economic manipulation. We are convinced that the sustainability of global food systems depends on close coordination between governments, donors, international organizations, the private sector and civil society. No country can address these challenges alone."
