Ukraine’s Cultural Diplomacy Month on Wikipedia - 2025
15 April 2025 16:44

Today marks the start of the fifth ‘Ukraine’s Cultural Diplomacy Month on Wikipedia’, during which we will be highlighting prominent Ukrainian figures in culture and the arts.

The first person we want to talk about is the artist Oleksandr Murashko (1875-1919). He was a Ukrainian painter, one of the founders of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts, a teacher and a prominent representative of the intellectual and creative elite of his time. He is still often mistakenly considered a Russian artist. This misconception has its roots in the long history of the occupation of Ukrainian lands.

Murashko took an active part in the events of the Munich Secession and had a huge influence on the Ukrainian artistic environment. He made great efforts to consolidate the artistic forces of Kyiv, and contributed to the creation of the Kyiv Association of Artists and the Ukrainian Academy of Arts. His paintings were exhibited at the Venice Biennale, and his works were published in leading European magazines, including the German ‘Jugend’.

We invite you to explore his story and join ‘Ukraine’s Cultural Diplomacy Month on Wikipedia’ by translating articles about Ukrainians who made a lasting mark on global culture. Let’s help the world learn more about Ukraine and its heritage.

The project is organised by the Ukrainian Institute, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, and Wikimedia Ukraine.

Full details about the competition, including the list of recommended articles and participation rules, can be found on the project page https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Ukraine%27s_Cultural_Diplomacy_Month_2025
