Today, we mark Ukrainian Statehood Day. This day is not only about the present – it is about over a thousand years of our statehood, from the times of medieval Rus to
the Ukraine of today.
On this day, we honour Volodymyr the Great, who in 988 adopted Christianity – a choice that laid the foundations for our state.
Ukrainian statehood has proved stronger than any invader. It lives on in our trident – a symbol dating back to the Rus era – in the blue and yellow of our flag, and in our songs, poems, and national spirit.
Ukraine has existed, exists today, and will continue to exist. And today, Ukrainians stand with weapons in hand to defend not only our present and future, but also our past – our identity, history, and values.
