On Sunday 13 April 2025, Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Mozambique, Rostyslav Tronenko, took part in a ceremony to honour the memory of the victims of the Tutsi Genocide that took place in Rwanda in 1994. The events in Maputo were organised by the Rwandan High Commission (Embassy) in Mozambique.

Hundreds of participants, including representatives of local authorities and the diplomatic corps, citizens and friends of Rwanda, joined the procession and the wreath-laying ceremony next to the symbolic flame of remembrance.

The main part of the ceremony took place at the Polana Serena Hotel. The guest of honour, Dr Samaria Tovela, Minister of Education and Culture of Mozambique, stressed the importance of preserving the memory of such sad events in order to prevent them from being repeated in the future. Rwanda's High Commissioner (Ambassador) to Mozambique, Donat Ndamage, recalled the causes and consequences of the 1994 tragedy and called for a strong condemnation of the ideology of genocide. The UN representative emphasised that ‘Never Again’ is not just a slogan, but everyone's duty. A survivor of the tragedy and the leader of the Rwandan community also addressed the audience, calling for unity in the fight against the ideology of hatred.

In the Book of Condolences, the Ambassador of Ukraine expressed his deepest sympathies to the people of Rwanda and confirmed Ukraine's support for the preservation of memory, the condemnation of genocide and the promotion of peace and human dignity. As a nation that survived the Holodomor genocide last century and is now defending itself against a genocidal war, Ukrainians deeply share the pain of the Rwandan people.
